Why Uniforms Are Important

Wearing uniforms has been a method of the Scouting movement from the beginning. Decades of experience show uniforming to have many benefits, including these:

  • Equality. The uniform represents a democratic ideal of equality. Youth from various cultures and different economic levels wear the same uniform and cooperate as equals.
  • Identification. The uniform identifies a youth as a member of the Cub Scouts. Badges on the uniform tell other members that he or she belongs to their den, pack, and council. The uniform itself identifies a good citizen to the entire community.
  • Achievement. The uniform displays badges and other awards so the accomplishments of each Cub Scout can be immediately recognized.
  • Commitment. Wearing a uniform is a constant reminder to each Cub Scout of their commitment to the ideals and purposes of Cub Scouting: duty to God, loyalty to country, and helpfulness to others.

For these reasons, among others, we ask all parents to emphasize to their scouts the importance of wearing the correct and complete uniform on all suitable occasions.

Below are examples of what the uniform expectations are for each cub scout rank.
Address any uniform questions to your den leader or familypack70@gmail.com.

    Required:
    1. Hat - worn bill forward, straight on your head.
    2. Shirt - long or short sleeved, buttoned-up and tucked-in, always. (*Hint: This shirt will last the scout through the third grade, so size it appropriately if possible.) A t-shirt should be worn underneath at all times so that the Class A can be removed for messy or sweaty activities (such as painting, sports, etc.)
    3. Neckerchief & Slide
    4. Pants/shorts - with belt loops, official BSA pants are optional but the pants you choose if purchased from another store should be the same navy blue color.
    5. Belt - cut to length, but leave it a little longer to grow with them through the ranks.
    6. Shoes & Socks - no sandals or flip flops, shoes must be closed heel and toe for safety.
    7. Insignia / Patches - need to be affixed correctly. Refer to the BSA's Guide to Awards & Insignia, Section 2 - Cub Scout Insignia for proper placement. Please DO NOT use Badge Magic or other iron-on or wet type of fabric glue to attach the patches to your scout's uniform. If the patch is placed incorrectly or needs to be moved, the patch can come off but the glue residue leaves a mess behind and is there forever. Please only use needle and thread to sew on the patches. Sewing help can be requested from Jen Medlock for $1 per patch.
    8. Handbook - every scout needs the handbook for his/her rank. There is no handbook for Bobcat or Arrow of Light. Bobcat requirements are in the front of every rank handbook and Arrow of Light is part of the Webelos rank and in the same Webelos handbook. The spiral bound books stand up to wear-and-tear better than the regular book bindings.

Uniforms are the same for both boy and girl cub scouts.
The Lion uniform was previously a t-shirt and hat but with the transition to a full-fledged rank the uniform will be changing to look the same as Tiger - Bear. Photos will be updated when available.  Each rank has a color associated with it and has a hat/neckerchief in that color.

        Lion        Yellow
        Tiger       Orange
Wolf        Red (was yellow prior to 2018)
        Bear        Blue
Webelos and Arrow of Light scouts wear the tan and green "Scouts BSA" uniform similar to the leaders, with a plaid neckerchief and hat.

All uniform pieces can be purchased at our local Scout Shop located at the Jack Dembo Scout Center ("council office") at 1230 Indiana Ct, Redlands, CA 92374. You can also purchase online at ScoutShop.org

    Class B t-shirts

Our pack has designed custom t-shirts to be worn by scouts underneath their Class A uniforms as well as for parents and siblings.
Wearing your Class B t-shirt helps to differentiate our scouts, parents, leaders, and siblings from the crowd during a campout or outing.
They also look great and show your pride in your pack!

We tend to have a limited supply on-hand during meetings which can be purchased.
If we are out of the size you need, connect with Samantha Sumpter to put your request on the list for the next time that we place an order.
