MEMBERS OF THE SILVER MOCCASINS

The Silver Moccasins are honored to serve as adult leaders for the Scouts of Troop 146.  Rather than leaders, we think of ourselves as guides, mentors, and advisors to these young men as we instill in them the values of Scouting.  This group of men and women are dedicated to the well being of your Scout, to exemplify the Scout Oath and Law through our personal actions and speech, and to provide strong adult association for Scouts along their journey.  We come from many different backgrounds and skills, which only adds to the overall experience of our Scouts.

Our name comes from the 53-mile trail located in the San Gabriel Mountains traversing the ridges of the Angeles National Forest in California, which has as its highest point Mt. Baden-Powell (named after the founder of the Boy Scouts of America)

Les Beaver

Les became a registered leader in BSA January, 2010 when he was helping Pack 43 at Beaumont Elementary School as Asst. Cubmaster and Webelos I Den Leader.  During this time he also attended National Camp School to become a Certified Day/Family Camp Director, so he could assist as Program Director for Chehote District Day and Family Camps, and Program Director for Toqua District Family Camps.  In Aug. 2011, he became the Cubmaster for Pack 20 (Bearden Elementary) and served for two years.  Les is originally from Memphis where he attended Evangelical Christian School and advanced to Star rank with Troop 300, Chickasaw Council.  After high school, he attended Mississippi State University where he received a Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering, played percussion with the Famous Maroon Band, and was involved in numerous college and community theatre productions.

Les has a wife, Ann, and two children Benjamin and Ainsley.  He has worked for Knoxville Utilities Board as an Electrical Engineering Team Leader since December 2012, and is registered as a Professional Engineer in Tennessee since 2000.  Previously he worked in the electrical engineering private sector for 19 years with two consulting firms, Allen & Hoshall and Cannon and Cannon, Inc.  Les attends Bearden United Methodist Church where he sings in the adult choir, and directs the handbell choir.

Jack Berry

As Troops 146's newest Eagle Scout I want to give back to the Troop that has helped to nurture and guide me for the past seven years. I am a senior at the L&N STEM Academy in downtown Knoxville and after my senior year plan on going to UT to study mechanical engineering. I plan on helping the troop by assisting with the younger scouts and helping get them to first class rank. I believe my experience as a merit badge counselor at Camp Buck Toms will help with teaching these younger scouts.

Anthony Crist

Anthony became a registered Scout leader in February 2012 when he took over as the Cubmaster and Tiger Den Leader for Cub Scout Pack 39 chartered out of Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church. Anthony has since served in several roles in Scouting and is currently serving as an Assistant District Commissioner for the Great Smoky Mountain Council's Toqua District (our district), an Assistant Scoutmaster and Patrol Advisor for Boy Scout Troop 146, the Roundtable Commissioner for the Toqua District, and as a Committee Member for Cub Scout Pack 39.

Anthony currently has two sons in Scouting - Harry in Troop 146 and his younger brother Hayden in Pack 39.

Anthony was a Scout himself in his youth, completing the full Cub Scout program in Pack 551 earning Arrow-of-Light in 1979 and spending two years as a Boy Scout in Troop 772. Both of those units were located in Hickman County Tennessee, and part of the Middle Tennessee Council of the BSA.

Anthony is married to Mary Wilson who is a Scouter in her own right and currently serves as the Committee Chair for Cub Scout Pack 39 among other roles with the Pack and District.

In addition to Scouting, Anthony serves as an assistant coach on the Bearden Middle School Science Olympiad Team and coaches the Hovercraft event. He has previously coached U-8 and under boys soccer for AYSO.

Matthew Timbs

As a young scout, Matt was a member of Troop 5 in Elizabethton TN.  While participating in Scouting, he developed a love for the outdoors and for backpacking and camping.  He participated in backpacking throughout college.  After college he moved to Greensboro NC and became involved in Pack 23 and Troop 23 located in High Point, NC where he served as both den leader and Assistant Scoutmaster. Matt resumed his involvement with Scouting when oldest son, Caleb, joined Pack 146.  Upon completing Cub Scouts, Caleb chose Troop 146, and Matt decided to participate as an Assistant Scoutmaster.

The Timbs household has another up-and-coming cub scout, Joshua, who will be ready in another 4 years... we hope.  The Timbs boys also have an enthusiastic sister, Abby, and a loving mom, Emily.

Matt's hobbies and interests include fly fishing and backpacking, especially in the backcountry of the Smokies.   He also enjoys hiking, camping and making outdoor gear.  He is a software engineering manager by trade.

Karin Turnmire

I got involved with Troop 146 because my brothers are both active members in the Troop. My brother Jacob joined Cub Scouts when he was in first grade and that is when Scouting started to become a huge part of my life. I attended camp outs and helped my parents anyway I could with Pack 146. When I was a sophomore in high school I joined Venture Crew 59 and knew from that point on that I was going to be in Scouting for the rest of my life. Throughout high school I played important leadership roles in my crew, as VP of Program and later President.  I maintained my close relationship with Pack 146 by becoming a Den Chief and mentoring boys from Tiger year to Webelos.  Last year I was the Vice President of Communications for Southern Region Area 6 (all of Tennessee and Kentucky). This year I am the VP of Program for the Area.

When Jacob joined the Troop, I helped in any way I could.  I taught the horsemanship merit badge at Camp Silver Moccasin in 2016.  Once I turned 18 I became a Merit Badge Counselor and an adult leader for the Troop.  After taking some time to decide my exact position, I became the ASM in charge of Training. This is something I am very familiar with through Venturing and have become passionate about.  I want to help the Scouts participate in all the training they wish because nothing is more important than learning how to be an effective leader.  I will help them find training courses and arrange for them to participate to the best of my ability.

Outside of Scouting, I have been taking horse riding lessons for ten years and have been around horses my entire life. I have also played rugby for three nonconsecutive years, both at the high school and collegiate level.  I am currently attending the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.  My major is Secondary Education with a focus in history.  My number one passion is teaching others, and I am happy that with my positions in the Troop I am able to do just that.
